The Relationship Between ADHD and Superior Intelligence

What is ADHD and superior intelligence? ADHD is a disorder that occurs in childhood and is characterized by inattentiveness, distractibility, hyperactivity, and irritability. It can seriously interfere with academic performance, socialization, and daily difficulty in functioning. Intelligence can be defined as the ability to learn. Children with ADHD may appear to be average or lower in intelligence (based on standardized test scores). This may not be the case at all. Once their behaviors and symptoms are under control there may be an increase in the daily performance and standardized testing scores. Their ability to focus, follow directions, and learn is improved.

ADHD has no cure at this time but it can be successfully managed with medications. Though they are highly addictive, stimulant medications are given to children to manage symptoms and they are effective for most children. As adults they will be more likely to develop depression and substance abuse. Side effects include a diminished appetite, sleep problems, depression, and irritability.

Behavior therapy is used to teach children how to understand their symptoms. It is further used to teach children strategies to remember things better and increase their attention spans. Behavior therapy will usually include the parents and help to strengthen their parenting skills.

A healthy life style is best whether ADHD is present or not. A good diet, exercise, and adequate rest will also contribute to the easing of symptoms. This is a good way to bring a family together.
